WORD MATH CHALLENGE
Math Word Challenge is a game in which students attempt to rack up a high score
by solving word problems in math. The registered version has 300 problems
in two levels (grades 3-4 and grades 5-6) which cover addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. The problems are in the areas of whole numbers,
fractions/decimals/percents, money/time/measurement, problem solving,
processing data, and multiple step problems. The problems are presented in a
random order to ensure that each student gets a different progression of
problems. The shareware version contains 25 problems at each level and is
intended as a demonstration program only (although it works just like the
registered version.)
Word Math Challenge is also very good at getting students to read and follow
directions since they bounce from whole numbers to time to fractions and so
forth. They must read the directions for each problem in order to understand
what they are being asked to solve.
Even after a student has completed all of the problems in their level, they may
choose to start over again and try to beat their own score. They will receive
the same problems as the first time, but in a completely different order.
The game may be played from diskette or may be copied to a hard disk.
To play Word Math Challenge, simply type WMCHALL at the DOS prompt. You will be
shown the introductory credit screen and, after 30 seconds, you may press any
key to continue.
You will first be asked your name. This can be anything you wish it to be as
long as it is under 30 characters in length. Next, you will be asked which
level you would like to play. Again, the shareware version has only 25
questions at each level.
After selecting the level, you will be presented with the first math word
problem to solve. Notice at the bottom of the screen that you have the option
of skipping the problem by pressing F1. Doing so will result in the correct
answer for that problem being displayed. If a problem is skipped, you will
receive no points for it. Also, you are given 5 tries at correctly solving
each problem (the more tries needed, the lower the score) and, after the
fifth incorrect attempt, the correct answer is displayed.
You are scored on how many attempts you have to make at each solution. Your
total score is displayed and when you leave the game it is compared with the
top ten list. If your score is higher than one on the list, your name will be
placed there. Pressing F1 at this point will result in the list being cleared.
If you wish to stop playing, merely press ESC. Your name, score and the
problems completed will be saved. The next time you start the program and
sign-in (using the same name), you will be able to pick up where you left off.
Once all of the problems in the level have been solved (or skipped), your name
will be automatically taken from the sign-in list. This program monitors which
problems have been done in order to ensure that you do not get the same one
twice.
Exiting the program will automatically bring up the software catalog of
programs for education. This program features descriptions of each product
(many with example screens) and an automatic order form print function.
The registered version is available from me for $10.00 and can be obtained by
sending a check or money order to:
William Jimerson
720 Margo Drive

Once I receive your payment, I will send the program diskette and the user
manual immediately. Be sure to include the address to ship to and a note
stating which program you wish to purchase.
Or, you may use the SOFTCAT program and have the computer generate an order
form for you. Using this program will also allow you to read about other
programs I have developed.
